Our team members are knowledgeable in a project’s technical and financial aspects. They are always ready to address any concerns our clients may have.

Factors In Exceptional Plating and Anodizing Services

Our quality services set us apart from our competition, and they’ll put you ahead of yours.

  • Even plating material thickness. Especially with small, complicated geometries (such as the thread on a metal lug nut), metal plating may be deposited unevenly. Quality metal finishing entails precise deposition control to ensure a surface does not come with uneven “pitted” or “lumpy” plated material.
  • Specified plating thickness. Some treatments deposit one or a few molecule-thick plating layers, which can be approximated as virtually zero thickness. However, other plating treatments add measurable thickness to a treated surface. Relating to the previous point, a plated surface should have plating appropriate for the component’s function and operating environment. Two subpoints to consider:
    • A thicker plating layer is only sometimes better. Though, as a general rule, thicker plating results in more robust corrosion resistance, there are complications.
    • Grinding or spot failures may happen quicker with thicker plating that grates against another surface during operations.
  • Dimensional fidelity. Reid Metal Finishing deals with projects and clients demanding tight dimensional tolerances. Aerospace, defense, and firearm hardware components do not allow much leeway. Considering the conditions inside jet engines and repeated heating/friction (even with proper lubrication), anodizing/plating thickness is critical to get right. Excessive plating will add measurable thickness that, under exceptionally hot or cold operating conditions, will add up to enough thermal deformation to compromise component performance.
  • Pre-plating cleaning/treatment. Quality metal finishing entails preparing a surface with proper acidic and water washes. Metallurgical analysis on the component surface is critical in determining what kind of an acid wash, exposure, and temperature profile would be best. Aggressive pre-plating preparations may do more harm than good with the wrong metal/alloy.
  • Temperature control and thermal stress relief. Many aspects of quality metal finishing entail heating and cooling steps. As metal components are expected to perform in punishing conditions for extended periods, surface and internal structural integrity must be protected from thermal deformation or stress. Reid Metal Finishing implements tight temperature and QA controls to ensure clients’ components return uncompromised by thermal stress.
